When I thought about all the potential health problems it could lead to, I became seriously terrified. Having very young grandkids now, it terrified me thinking about my health not allowing me to be my fullest around them.

3 Things I Didn’t Understand About Weight Loss After 40 (Until I Lived It)

I used to think I just needed more willpower. More gym time. Fewer carbs. But after turning 42 and gaining 15 pounds seemingly overnight, I realized weight loss after 40 is a completely different game. Here's what I’ve learned through a LOT of trial, error, and late-night Googling:

1. Your Metabolism Really Does Slow Down
I used to roll my eyes when people blamed age, but it’s real. After 40, hormonal shifts—especially around perimenopause—start changing how your body stores fat. I was doing the same workouts and eating the same salads, but my weight barely budged. Spoiler alert: Turns out, it’s not just about “calories in, calories out” anymore.

2. You’re Exhausted (and That Matters A LOT!)
Between work, kids, aging parents, and everything else, I was constantly drained. And when you're tired, your body produces more cortisol—which can actually make you hold onto weight, especially around your belly. No one talks about how much stress and sleep matter in this process.

3. Diets That Worked in Your 30s Just... Don’t
I tried all my old go-tos—juice cleanses, cutting carbs, running miles—and they did nothing. I had to completely rethink what “healthy” looks like at this stage. It’s not about eating less; it’s about eating smarter and supporting your hormones and metabolism.

So, I started making small changes: cutting back on portion sizes, trying to stop snacking so much, and even attempting a few workouts.

But when the pandemic hit back in 2020, I found myself so stressed out that I turned to comfort food.

I knew it was the worst thing I could do, but somehow, I kept convincing myself it was okay. There were things I just couldn’t control, right? What else was I supposed to do?

At that time, the gyms were closed, and I didn’t feel comfortable working out in the park with everyone watching me...

Then, my friend Martha who I mentioned earlier, told me about how she was seeing great results losing about 21 pounds in her first few weeks, just by drinking a few cups of a Costa Rican tea every day.

But how was that possible? It didn't seem fair because I had worked so hard to get no results whatsoever!

I was happy for her, however, I thought she might be exaggerating a bit. I could hear the excitement in her voice though, so I knew there must be something to this.

Name a diet, and I've probably tried it. The only thing I had to go by about the tea at this point in time was what it had done for Martha.
